How do I become a helicopter pilot?
Many people think you need to become an airplane pilot before becoming a helicopter pilot, this is not true. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) outlines all of the requirements needed to become a helicopter pilot in their abbreviated regulation book called the FAR/AIM. This book can be purchased online or at a local airport. To get started you will need to contact a local flight school and setup an appointment with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). Below are a few of the FAA requirements you will be expected to meet to become a Private Pilot:
-Must be at least 17 years of age.
-Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
-Must hold at least a third class medical certificate (Student Pilot’s License).
-Must have at least 40 hours of flight time.
A Private Pilot’s License gives you the ability to fly for recreation but not commercially. The Commercial Pilot’s License is the next step to becoming eligible to fly for hire. To receive a commercial pilots license, the FAA requires pilots to have more flight experience, more training, and more testing. Though, a Commercial Pilot’s license gives you the ability to fly for hire, the helicopter industry is heavily regulated by insurance companies, making it difficult for “low time” pilots to find a job.
Aside from flight training jobs, aspiring helicopter pilots can and should expect it to take several years before they accumulate enough hours and experience to be offered a position as a pilot.
Does McMahon Helicopters offer flight training?
We do not operate small trainer helicopters. However, we do offer flight training for students that are willing to pay for turbine aircraft time. Our smallest helicopter is a Bell Jet Ranger which starts at $900/hr. Most of our students have purchased their own turbine helicopters through McMahon Helicopters and lease the aircraft back for charter. Visit our Other Services page for more information on purchasing and lease back programs. |
